Royal Family: Princess Diana’s unusual favorite fruit she would eat ‘bowlfuls’ of when Prince William and Harry were kids

Princess Diana was the People’s Princess, but when it came to fruit her tastes were hardly apples and pears. Remembering his time with the Royal Family, chef Darren McGrady has revealed Lady Spencer’s unusual favorite fruit she would eat by the bowful when Princes William and Harry were just kids.

Speaking about his time as Diana’s personal cook McGrady recalled “she wasn’t a good cook” and once left pasta to boil over while hooked in a conversation. It put the pilot light out on the hob causing a gas leak in the palace kitchens. Luckily Diana was saved by “twelve hunky firemen” (her own words her) and McGrady returned to work to find the kitchen unexploded.

Rather than cooking, McGrady – who also cooked for the Queen for 11 years – remembered Diana was more at home picking through a bowl of Lychee fruits. He said : “She loved eating lychees, she would eat a whole bowlful, she ‘d sit there and just shell them herself and just eat those Lychees. She loved those.”

Princess Di had very niche tastes when it came to her fruitbowl

He also remembered she loved stuffed bell peppers, stuffed egg plant, and “she loved bread and butter pudding”. You might think she was vegetarian from that list of favorites, but McGrady says she Diana she enjoyed meat as well, though she preferred chicken and fish to read meats.

Her absolute favorite dish though? McGrady revealed it was Egg Suzette. The hollowed out jacket potato with wilted spinach, a poached egg, and some sort of buttery hollandaise to finish looks like an total faff to make. The perfect dish for a princess then.

The Princess had an irresistible urge for bowls full of lovely Lychees

Sometimes if she was feeling cheeky Diana might even opt for extra bacon. However, she wasn’t always a fan of the ‘jacket’ part of the potato, leaving it uneaten according to McGrady. When it came to the boys though, it appears Diana was happy to go off script. She often went against the nanny’s orders and let them eat pizza. As McGrady said: “The Princess just wanted them to be boys.”
