Convertibles in general are considered quite cool. But in recent years, demand for them has been on the decline. Usually, convertibles were built around sedans, coupes, or hatchback body styles. However, all of them are on the decline in demand. SUVs and crossovers are popular choices amongst buyers. Coming to Volkswagen in particular, the German automaker in the recent past killed nearly every single convertible model in its range. There is no Golf Cabriolet, no Beetle Cabriolet anymore. But there is one that still lives on, for the time being at least. The Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet is one of the coolest crossovers on sale. Volkswagen has given the model a refresh for the 2022 model year, and we just love the way it looks.
VW T-Roc Cabriolet Is Very Well Designed
Volkswagen revealed a facelift version of the T-Roc crossover recently for the 2022 model year. At the same time, it also unveiled the similarly updated T-Roc Cabriolet. The T-Roc Cabriolet features a lightweight folding fabric top. The system is designed to allow the roof to be lowered on the move in just nine seconds under the speed of 19 mph.
Behind the front wheels, the T-Roc Cabriolet doesn’t share a single body panel with the hard-top model. It offers a two-door design and a longer wheelbase than the regular model. Naturally, the chassis had to be firmed up. The cabin floor has been strengthened with new crossbeams.
The T-Roc Cabriolet Is Quite A Cool SUV
As for the styling, the T-Roc Cabriolet gets the same updates and changes as the hard-top model. The design is clean and elegant, like all modern VWs. The wide and flat front grille seamlessly integrates into the Newly designed LED headlights. The LED DRLs stretch the full width of the vehicle from the headlights into the middle slat of the grille. The front bumper has been redesigned entirely. The fog lamps now feature three stacked LED lights lower down on the bumper.
Along the side, the convertible SUV is largely similar to before. It now features a larger set of 19-inch Misano diamond-cut alloy wheels finished in black. Around the back, Volkswagen has revised the look significantly. The overall tail lamp design is the same, but the LED styling inside is completely new and looks even cooler. The rear bumper has a completely revised styling with an even sportier look.
The T-Roc Cabriolet’s Interior Gets Modern Touches
Inside the cabin, the T-Roc Cabriolet has also received some updates. The dash has been redesigned and now features all of VW’s latest tech and features. The driver gets a brand new multi-function steering wheel. As standard, the convertible crossover features the fully-digital driver’s gauge cluster that VW Group calls the Virtual Cockpit. The system has been updated to the latest software and modern hardware for improved performance. It now runs the third generation of the Modular Infotainment System (MIB3). In touchscreen infotainment system has also been updated with a brand new 8-inch display is also standard. The updated electronic architecture enables new driver-assist functions with IQ Drive Travel Assist, adaptive cruise control, and park assist for the SUV. The HVAC controls remain where they were before, but the switchgear has been updated. The new system is a touch-capacitive panel that is similar to what is found on the new Golf models.
The T-Roc Cabriolet Packs A Decent Punch
The T-Roc Cabriolet is offered only in the higher Style and R-Line trim levels. The SUV is available with two engine options. The base engine on offer is the 1.0-liter TSI turbo three-cylinder that makes 108 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. But a more powerful 1.5-liter TSI turbo four-cylinder engine is available. This motor makes 147 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed manual is standard on both engines that only power the front wheels. The option of a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch auto is offered for the bigger motor. The engines don’t offer a lot of power, but the T-Roc packs enough punch for everyday use.
The T-Roc Cabriolet Is One Of A Kind
Some may say that the T-Roc is trying too hard, but a case can be made in its favor that other SUVs in its class are not trying hard enough. The T-Roc is one of a kind model that doesn’t have a specific rival.
Until recently, the only other convertible SUV was the Range Rover Evoque Convertible and that is no longer on sale. The T-Roc sure concedes some practicality in favor of flamboyance and being true to the origins of an off-roader. With everything said and done, we love the design of the VW T-Roc Cabriolet, and you cannot change our minds.
